        ON THE DAY

It started a little later than planned at around 8pm, it was pitch boac outside, which made the lighting we used inside a lot better in terms of how the scene looked. It took me and my dad about 20 minutes to set everything up and get the right lighting and then we were able to begin filming. In the end, I did get the shots I needed and we finished liming at around 9:30pm, just so I was sure that I had the right shots.

        STORYBOARD

        * I have changed my style of logo to be more conventional to a horror film.

I used Final Cut to also create my animatic storyboard as it allowed me to put in certain cuts and transfers, such as a fade, into the filming. I was also able to put possible sound effects in which helps explain the storyline better. I have used arrows to show direction of my characters and my shots as well as describing the scene in the boxes below. This is because when it comes to filming I can refer back to the basic shots that I wanted for my film.

        PLAN FOR FILMING DAY 2

        FILMING: 11TH JANUARY 2015       TIME: 12:30PM - 2:30PM
        DIRECTOR: MEGAN BYFORD
        SCENES:
From my storyboard it would be scenes 4-12

        CHARACTERS NEEDED:
        • Killer (either gender as nothing will be revealed)
        • Victim (girl)
        CAST:
        • Killer - Alan Byford
        • Victim - Sunner Edlin
        • Filming - Megan (me)
        • Lighting " - "
        • Microphone " - " (although at points held by helpers)
        • Directing " - "
        • Other help - Janvi Bhalla, brought in fake blood for me to use
        COSTUMES NEEDED:
        • Victim - Doll outfit or something that could be similar (borrowing a friends Halloween outfit), make-up needs to be doll like (as shown in previous posts).
        • Killer - black hoodie, black trousers (jogging bottoms), black gloves. The black shows darkness and evil as well as mystery.
        LOCATION:
        • Weston Woods - this is because I need the person running through the woodland away from the killer and it is a creepy location.
        PROPS NEEDED:
        • Knife - was real and I painted some fake blood on it.
        • Costumes
        EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
        • Camera
        • Microphone
        • Boom Pole
        • Phone for extra lighting if necessary (filming during the day shouldn't need that much extra light)
        • Tripod for the camera
        DIRECTIONS TO LOCATION:

Weston woods is at the edge of Baldock, it is very easy to find from various locations, we will have to walk through the actual woods on foot, so if it's too cold I will provide coats (if they don't already have one), hand warmers, etc. At first we can make a base at my house to do the make-up and costumes, then we can get a lift from my family (mother/father, they have agreed to help).

        ON THE DAY

Sunner came round my house around 1pm, which was later than planned but other arrangements had come up suddenly, but when she arrived we started straight on the make-up aspects as that was the hardest to get right. we started fresh with foundations and powders, and then with eyes. The eyes had to have make-up that not only showed the doll-like features but also made her look tired and almost dead-looking, another reason why we used pale foundation. We also put some of this dark makeup around her nose and edges of her face to make it look a little bit dirty - as the victim would have been kept in a shed for a while so that would make sense. Then we did the lips, they had to be the feature that stood out the most as they are commonly related to the doll appearance. Finally the blusher was a big feature too, so we put on a lot of pink to make the cheeks look full. After that was done, Sunner changed into the costume and some fake blood was applied to the arms and wrists.

My dad dressed in dark tracksuit bottoms and jumper/coat, as well as bringing gloves and a balaclava, this made absolutely sure the face couldn't be seen. We also bought a real knife that I had painted in some of the fake blood.

Packing the equipment, we left my house around 3:40pm and got to the woods about 10 minutes later in the car as it is relatively near to my house. We walked around to find somewhere to set up for the first sequence and filmed that, with a few different angles, before moving to a new spot to film more running. the spots included a range of different angles and the spaces ranged from something in a tight frame to a much wider frame. Through the time period we were out there the evening got darker and near the last few shots, it was almost pitch black. This added to the effect as at the beginning she is free and nearer the end she gets captured and that's a metaphorically a darker situation, so having a darker atmosphere is better. After all the shots I had taken, we left around 5:30pm.

        SCENE(S):

        • Door of a dark, creepy shed slamming with trees in the background of the shot to show location of the killer's main 'den' or 'lair'.
        • Establishing panning shot of the shed and the rest of the woodland area.
        LOCATION:

        • Nan's old shed, Hitchin.
        CAST:

        • N/A

        STORYBOARD NUMBER(S)

        • Slamming door - Shot 4
        • Establishing shot not shown on storyboard, but will be included in actual film.

        EQUIPMENT:

        • Camera
        • Camera's Microphone
This day went well, I got the shots I wanted for the shed's creepy look, the noise the shed made was dramatic and that will sound good on the final film. I wanted a loud noise because that might make the audience jump or be frightened as this is accurate for a horror movie.

        LOGO IDEAS

I like these designs because they're all a design that can be applied to any film and looks professional. The red, however, does match the colours of blood, which is the same for the most of these designs. I chose this colour as is more appropriate to the theme of the film opening. My favourite is the last one so it is more probable I will use a design like that in my opening.

THE NUMBER 23 OPENING TITLE SEQUENCE ANALYSIS

        0:00 - 0:10

The title sequence immediately begins, with the title at the beginning. It is surrounded by the numbers 2 and 3, and the main title is in red, which slowly fades into something that resembles a blood splatter or a red ink blot.

        0:10 - 1:09

Actors names start to appear in between the numbers 2 and 3, the red blood/ink splatters remain on the screen on a background of something that looks like old style paper.

        1:10 - 1:50

Other credits start to appear, such as the music by, casting by and directed by. Each change of credit is done by a disfigured page, as if to make the audience look at it and be dizzied by it.

The music throughout the title sequence is in a low tone and has some irregular beats and instrument noises which can give the impression of a bad mood or an unnatural tone. It's quite fast paced and get's faster throughout, as if whatever is about to happen is getting closer and closer, which can make the audience feel uncomfortable.

Throughout the whole sequence, facts that relate to the number 23 are put in the middle of the credits, they are not directly related to the plot but shows even more, the relevance of that number it the film. None of the facts are positive which shows the darkness of the film and the number. Also, because they are true facts, that can also make the audience more uncomfortable as it relates to something realistic, making things even more scary.

        SOUND EFFECTS

In the shots of my film there are a variety of sounds that I will need to create and atmosphere and suspense.

Wind noises; I can film these as they are usually in the background of the woods at this time of year (November). The wind noises make a very eerie and spooky kind of sound as if there is no one and the victim or killer are both completely alone, which can cause the viewers to be quite distressed as they know no one is going to help the victim. It is also a diegetic noise as the film will be set in a woodland location.

Walking on leaves; although this can be filmed, I want this to be quite a focused sound as when the victim will be running through the woods I want there footsteps to be the only thing that you can hear, as this makes the viewer feel as if that is the only thing that the killer may be able to hear too - this makes people uneasy as you don't want the victim to get caught by the killer. I will probably either get a sound effect from the internet that is not copyrighted, or film the running on leaves noise with the microphone especially for that reason, then edit it to fit the noise with my scene.

Shed door slamming; I have filmed this scene and the noise that comes from it is already loud and realistic, so I won't make any adjustments to that sound. It is quite intense and might make people just suddenly.

Heartbeat noises; these match the expectations of running, it will be something the character hears but it won't be that loud so people outside of the character will hear. It will create suspense as the intensity of the scene as it reinforces the idea that the victim is in danger and has high stress levels. I will probably add this sound effect in as the actual heartbeat noise from my actor won't be loud enough.

Heavy breathing; this noise I can film as when my actor is running, she may get out of breath, if not, it is a noise you can act out quite easily. I can use the microphone to pick up this noise. Heavy breathing puts the audience under pressure as well as they can imagine that the killer will be able to hear that as well and that is only another reason for the victim to be found and caught.

Pages of a book turning; I need this noise at the beginning when the killer is looking through his album of photos of past victims. This can be recorded at the location as it will be dead silence in his 'lair', and this noise should be the only thing that is heard, apart from maybe small wind noises in the background.

        DETAILED RESPONSE FROM MY SURVEY

Why do you like/not like horror movies?:

I allowed this question to have longer answers because it would help e see what I should put in, e.g. the thrills and the sudden jumps, suspense and maybe what not to put in, such as excessive gore.

Who do you usually see as the villains/victims?:

This question would help me decide on characters, most people saw the females as the victims as they are shown in the media as being stereotypically weaker and helpless, although some say they would prefer a female villain for once because it would make a change for once and sometimes women can have a scarier look about them. Male victims have also been shown as rare, but male villains aren' really rare at all, this is because they have a stereotype of being stronger and in control.

        Types of light settings?

This question is useful because it would help me decide when to set the film, whether it should be in night time or put a black and white filter on it. From this, I've decided to set it in an 'unsettling light', since the woodland area, a daytime winter haze can give that location a creepy and silent feel.
